The Dutch Barn, Owl Lodge, Lacock
Vaughan's Kitchen will take you on a culinary journey of India in honour of Queen Victoria, who became fascinated with learning about the country during her Golden Jubilee celebrations in 1887. She discovered more about the history and cuisine through her Muslim servant, Abdul Karim and even learned to speak Urdu.
The Queen and the British public found the new flavours, ingredients and recipes from the sub-continent exciting and different. Some were classics like Rogan Josh and others gave birth to current favourites such as Chicken Tikka Masala. Tonic water found its perfect partner in gin, Indian Pale Ale (IPA) was created through enduring the long sea journey to its destination. Although the 'Empress of India' never actually visited the country, Abdul Karim personally cooked many of his country's classics for his monarch.
In keeping with the way Indian food was served in Britain in the late 19th century, all the dishes will be mild with chilli on the side for those who like some heat.
